About Small Gully Wines

In 1998 Stephen Black paired up with second generation vigneron Darren Zimmerman and Robert Bader to begin producing Small Gully Wines. The winery is nestled among the vines in a small gully on Roennfeldt Road, Marananga, also known as the Casino Strip.  The concept of the three partners was to create small batches of high-quality Barossa Valley wines, but as time has gone on the volumes of these acclaimed wines have increased so as to satiate the thirst and demand of the masses.

As Stephen Black began to travel more selling the elixirs of the Barossa his two sons, Joseph and Charlie have taken the reigns of the wild horse that is Small Gully Winery, fermenting Mr. Blacks Formulae, de-criminalizing his Concoctions and bewitching his Black Magic, while always following the recipes and rituals as stipulated in The Little Black Book.  Joe graduated from Adelaide University in 2003 with a degree in Oenology and then went on to work vintages at Kangarilla Mclaren Vale,  Ravenswood California, Campbells Rutherglen and Domain Sainte Croix Languedoc-Roussillon before returning home to Small Gully in 2006.  Charlie studied viticulture in Margaret River while working among the vines at Xanadu Wines and then went on to manage vineyards for Leeuwin Estate before making his way back to Small Gully in 2011.

The combination of the brothers’ oenology and viticultural backgrounds on top of what they have both learned from Stephen has added extra layers of complexity, depth and excitement to the wines created at Small Gully.
