‘Sur Lie’ is all about freshness, harboring the energy of Karridale, and texture, achieved through sur lie maturation. The Gant & Co wines are self-proclaimed to be “lovingly grown and sensitively made,” and this wine tells that story perfectly. To achieve that kind of depth and balance requires a mastery – or at least, a committed, routined practice – of brining oneself into attunement with the choreography that is winemaking: the tending to vines, the harvesting of grapes, the mood of the yeast, all in a cellar that hums with activity and birth. That is what Claudia and Matt have achieved with this wine: utter harmony.

The grapes were manually harvested from spur-pruned, leaf-plucked vines. In the cellar, the Sauvignon Blanc was pressed and sent to old French barriques to ferment right away, while the Sémillon juice was allowed skin contact for 12 hours before being pressed and sent to the barrel room. The wines stayed in their respective barriques for 9 months to mature; malolactic fermentation was permitted. The wines were racked to tank, blended, and bottled with just a light sulfur addition.

Tasting Notes

At first, it smells of sweet pea and ocean air. The palate is a harmonious marriage of texture, springtime spice, and light. This is a magnificently pure tribute to Margaret River’s cooling ocean winds and ancient soils. It finishes with the kind of restraint that invites wonder: what remains behind this spellbinding facade?

"The 2021 Sur Lie, a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, is a more serious and savoury example of the classic Margaret River white blend with 12 hours of skin contact adding a savoury edge. Reserved and understated with citrus, guava and pithy aromas plus creamy/leesy complexity and spicy oak. There's a distinct zestiness to the acidity which provides impact before mellowing out with lemony/grapefruit flavours and a touch of bitterness to finish. A wild ride, but a good one."

"70% Semillon (Block 6), 30% Sauvignon Blanc (Block 13). 12 hours skin contact. Barrel-fermented and matured sur lie for 9 months. The oak seems to show more in the aroma here than it did on the Fumé 2022, with mealy spice as well as piercing grapefruit-like freshness. Feels much fuller-bodied than you might expect from a wine of 12.5%, presumably the effect of the oak and the lees ageing. Chewy, salty, deep and satisfyingly long. Really mouth-watering but extremely well balanced. A complete wine."
