About Balfour

With a history dating back to 1503, the exquisite Tudor-framed Hush Heath Manor is the family home of the Balfour-Lynn’s since the 1980s. The Manor nestles into the hill, overlooking the vineyards and estate with magnificent views across the Weald of Kent. The 400 acres enveloped in ancient oak woodland is a veritable Eden and a fitting setting for the Balfour wines and vision.

The winemaking era began in 2002, when Richard Balfour-Lynn planted his first vineyards on these clay-rich soils, with an ambition to make fine sparkling rosé.  To turn his dream into reality Balfour-Lynn was helped by Stephen Skelton, MW who used his extensive experience with English vineyards.  In charge of the winemaking and the state-of-the-art winery is Owen Elias, who has been UKVA winemaker of the year four times and has a host of international and national awards to his name.  Owen’s son Fergus is the day-to-day winemaker responsible for the classic fizz.  On the Hush Heath Estate there are 40 acres of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, along with small amounts of ancient Champagne varieties as well as Bacchus.  Hush Heath is the only English vineyard dedicated to the creation of Rosé sparkling wine, and the aim has always been to produce wines of world-beating quality that stand on their own as  modern classics.

The vines and wines benefit from a longtime understanding of outstanding soil; deep Wealden clay, unique to this corner of Kent, which provides dense structure in the wines and vibrant, lively acidity.  The vineyard team takes a hands-on approach by inspecting the vines daily, and by being careful so that each decision for the current vintage supports the best possible outcome for the following year. Over the course of the season leaves are stripped and green harvested by hand, ensuring that each vine is developing the most flavorsome and concentrated fruit possible.

Balfour Wines are known for their clean, fresh and precise style. Brilliantly clear color, distinctive fruit on the nose and a wonderful balance of vibrant English acidity on the palate, giving way to a long mouthwatering finish. Balfour wines boast balance, elegance, and of course loads of personality.
