‘Little Book’

Shiraz   |   Barossa Valley - Australia

About

This is a powerful wine, but with real definition, that has maintained its strong following for nearly 15 years. Those that have tasted it can attest to its spiritual abilities. Stephen Black, the owner and winemaker, was in the pharmaceutical business before he got into wine. The graphic designers who helped with the label tried to create a link between his original career and his current desire to make great wine. Thus, the beginning of any good blend is referring to your trusty Little Book for a tried and true recipe. Sourced mainly from the house vineyards close to the winery (Darren Zimmerman’s Marananga Vineyards), and the small remainder from vineyards in South Australia. The Barossa Valley’s 2023 harvest was 3-4 weeks later than in recent years, producing red wines that are intense, rich, and balanced in flavor and color, with great natural acidity.

The fruit was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vessels with skin contact for 4 days, allowing for maximum extraction. The wine was then pressed off skins and sent to mature in 300L seasoned oak barrels, where it aged for 8 months before being returned to stainless steel for the final aging. It was bottled with a coarse filtration and a dosage of sulfur. No fining.

Tasting Note

Ripe boysenberry, black cherry, and peppery spices on a highly perfumed nose. The palate is silky and open-knit, with sweet vanilla and cola notes building in the glass into a rich mouthfeel that is surprisingly lively for its boldness. Smooth tannins come in late to add shape and grip.
