Cullen ‘Red Moon’ is named after the phenomenon that occurs during a total lunar eclipse when the light filtering through the Earth’s atmosphere dapples the moon in red light. It is a lively blend of Malbec, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petit Verdot, and Merlot from the Mangan and Cullen Vineyards (both certified biodynamic, certified organic, and dry-farmed). The 2024 vintage was the hottest, driest and earliest harvest on record. Rainfall turned off like a tap at the end of September 2023, with nominally no rain until the season broke in May 2024. Unseasonable warmth all through the growing season combined with heatwaves in January meant harvest started early and was over extremely quickly.
The fruit was harvested and de-stemmed. It fermented with native yeast in stainless steel, and the skins were pressed off the juice between 11-17 days. The wine was then sent to one-year-old puncheons for eight months of maturation. It was blended in tank and bottled with a light fining, filtering, and dosage of sulfur.
