About Balfour

Balfour, co-founded by Richard and Leslie Balfour-Lynn, is a distinguished English sparkling wine house situated on the historic Hush Heath Estate in Kent, where an iconic Tudor manor, built in 1503, still stands. The winemaking journey began in 2002 when Leslie suggested planting the first vineyards with the ambition of crafting a rosé sparkling wine of exceptional quality, inspired by their favorite pink Champagne, Billecart-Salmon Rosé. They planted five acres of vines with the mindset, “If we can’t sell it, we’ll drink it.” Fortunately, their vision was met with resounding success.

In 2004, Balfour Brut Rosé was launched, and its inaugural vintage quickly garnered acclaim, winning a gold medal and the Trophy at the International Wine Challenge—the first English wine to achieve such an honor. The accolades continued, with Balfour Brut Rosé becoming the first English sparkling wine served in British Airways First Class worldwide and being the exclusive English wine served at the London 2012 Olympics. Dubbed “England’s most exclusive pink fizz,” it set a new standard for English sparkling wines.

The Balfour vineyards at Hush Heath Estate, covering 40 acres, are dedicated to Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay, along with small amounts of ancient Champagne varieties and Bacchus. The unique Wealden clay soil of the estate contributes to the wine’s vibrant acidity and dense structure. Under the expert guidance of Owen Elias, a four-time UKVA Winemaker of the Year, and his son Fergus, the winemaking process is meticulously overseen to ensure the highest quality.

Balfour Wines are celebrated for their clean, fresh, and precise style. Known for their brilliant clarity, distinctive fruit aromas, and balanced, elegant palate, Balfour wines consistently deliver a refined experience. With a commitment to producing modern classics, Balfour has firmly established itself as a leader in the world of English sparkling wines.
