“Steenwold! South Africa: Ten Years On”

Can South African wines age? That is the central question asked during the Steenwold tasting in May 2025, inspired by the UK’s famous Southwold Bordeaux event. Its debut brought together 78 top South African whites and reds, including those from Craven, Thorne & Daughters, and Patatsfontein, from the standout 2015 vintage, served blind and grouped by style. Hosted in the cellars of Berry Bros. & Rudd by Victoria Mason MW (The Wine Society) and Mark Dearing (Justerini & Brooks), Steenwold offered a look into how these wines are showing 10 years on. So, how did the wines fare? “Some of the Steenwold flights were equal to the Côte de Beaune Premier Crus or surpassed them, plus of course… most of these wines cost a fraction of Burgundy. In terms of quality-to-price ratio, I cannot think of another wine-producing country that comes close. Yes, you can quote me on that,” wrote Neal Martin. Read more here.
