Australia is about far more than Shiraz, Cabernet and Chardonnay.  In fact French cultivars might not even be the best varieties to be planted throughout this wonderful continent.  The arid, Mediterranean climate throughout much of South Australia provides the ideal conditions for Iberian and southern Italian grapes.  Ashley Ratcliff of Ricca Terra recognized that years ago and has pushed forward with a new path of ‘sustainability’ and in turn growing some of the best examples of these off-beaten varieties in Australia.  Under his ‘estate’ label, Ricca Terra, he has also produced one of the best Nero d’Avola bottlings in the country according to a tastemaking panel of some of Australia’s most refined palates.
