Tasting Notes
This a powerful, dense, and intense Syrah that still showcases the lighter, more vibrant side of the Barossa. The nose is full of dark, brooding black and red fruits that meld seamlessly into the palate. There is a meaty spiciness and an herbal undercurrent that extends from the mid-palate, and the tannins are grippy and tight. The finish is marked by that signature Agricola lift of acidity thanks to fine-tuned picking.

"This is the meaty, very dark fruited one, gravelly in tannin, splashed with liquorice, meat drippings, pulverised rock minerality and lots of clove and woody spices. It feels very authoritative, concentrated, brooding and stern in a way. A weave of pulverised rock tannin shapes the wine and pulls it through the palate away from inkier, fleshy things into a long corkscrew of rocky chew and graphite-laden pucker. Deeply serious red wine, deeply complex and intense. A bold strike."

"The fruit for this wine is sourced from Ebenezer, specifically the Hoffmann vineyard holdings. "A component hails from Dimchurch," says Callum Powell, winemaker, "which is the property that the Hoffmanns first settled at in the 1850s, and "Home Old" is the oldest planting on that property, planted 1951. Just east of this is "Dallwitz Old," which was purchased by the Hoffmanns in the 1950s, and this is a small patch of the original plantings, closer to 1888 than 1912. This is my first year of dealing with these rows of Dallwitz Old." The 2022 Ebenezer Shiraz is spiced and dark, brooding and deep. It leads with bitter chocolate, freshly turned earth, salted licorice, boysenberry, blueberry, mulberry and aniseed. There are notes of fennel seeds and roasted lamb juice, with sumac and clove. It's a firm, pure, almost strictly structured wine, yet it is crystalline in its fruit presence. This is clearly, and expressively, a wine of place. Bottle number 0025/2145. 14.2% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax."
